Ah, the great outdoors! There’s nothing like unplugging from your daily routine and getting in touch with Mother Nature. Last weekend, we took a camping trip to the scenic Marmot Rock Campground, located on the south shore of Courtright Reservoir. With its jaw-dropping views and serene atmosphere, it was a trip worth every bit of planning, even if it came with its set of challenges—like forgetting to pack some essential cold-weather gear. Here’s a rundown of our adventure.
The Setting: Marmot Rock Campground
Elevated at 8,200 feet above sea level, Marmot Rock Campground offers a unique blend of natural beauty and quietude. The experience starts right from the drive up, with deer spotted darting about the woods, setting the tone for the adventure that lay ahead.
Final Moments Before Winter
Upon arrival, we noticed something peculiar: the campground signs were wrapped up, and the water supply was shut off. Clearly, preparations for the winter months were in full swing. And the best part? There were no paperwork or envelopes for campsite payment, indicating the sites were likely free for this final week of the season.
The Packing Snafu
You’d think a seasoned camper would remember to pack everything essential for the trip. Well, you’d be wrong. I forgot a jacket and gloves, while Sergio was without sweatpants and gloves. Needless to say, it was a cold experience.
Improvised Layering
Thanks to some quick thinking, I layered up with a flannel shirt over multiple tees. Although the sun provided some much-needed warmth, the shade had a nippy edge to it that kept us on our toes—literally.
The Experience: Nature, Noise, and Nuisance
A Room with a View
We snagged a campsite that boasted the best view of Courtright Reservoir. The sound of water softly hitting the rocks nearby made for peaceful nights. Nature wasn’t the only visitor, though; some small chipmunks were frequent guests at our site.
Soundscapes: From Serene to Startling
One night, the serenity was briefly disrupted by a pack of coyotes yipping and howling from across the lake. Though it was eerie, it was also a beautiful reminder of the wildlife that surrounded us.
The Extra Mile: Drones and Daring Heights
Drone Exploration
I employed my drone to capture the breathtaking surroundings, from the expansive lake to the towering trees and cliffs. But the real kicker? A hike up a one-way road led us to a daunting cliff with a small river at the bottom. Though a set of makeshift stairs led down—meant for PG&E staff to service equipment—we thought it too risky to descend. Instead, my trusty drone did the exploring for us.
Missing Out on Celestial Wonders
We learned later that a solar eclipse was happening on Saturday morning, but unfortunately, we couldn’t view it from the campground. You win some; you lose some.
Back to Reality
As we neared Shaver Lake on our return journey, our phones buzzed back to life. After two days out of range, we checked in with our family. A valuable lesson was learned by Sergio’s oldest child: no news doesn’t always mean bad news!
Conclusion
Marmot Rock Campground was a journey of unexpected turns, small challenges, and incredible experiences. Despite missing jackets and elusive solar eclipses, the trip was a resounding success. From hearing the water lap against the shore to capturing the world from above, each moment was a celebration of the great outdoors. As we reconnected with our daily lives, we took with us cherished memories and lessons learned—like double-checking your packing list next time!
And so, until the next adventure, Marmot Rock will always hold a special place in our hearts.
